What is the Amsterdam City Swim?

The Amsterdam City Swim is an annual charity swim through Amsterdam’s canals. It grew out of a 2011 fundraising campaign and became an annual event in 2012, raising money for research into ALS and support for people living with the disease.

For one carefully managed day, swimmers replace the usual canal traffic. Waternet monitors the route and carries out extra checks for the event; boats are kept out of the course while the swimmers pass. That is why this spectacle can happen once a year. It is not a general invitation to swim in Amsterdam’s canals.

The sight is wonderfully strange: orange caps moving between canal houses, bridges full of supporters, and a city waterway briefly turned into a charity race.

The Amsterdam City Swim 2026 routes

The 2026 layout differs from earlier editions, so use the official route page for the final map. The broad shape is:

• Classic Swim — about 2.1 km. Participants are taken by bus to the start at Keizersgracht 663. From there they swim towards the Amstel, cross near the Magere Brug, pass behind the Hortus Botanicus, continue via the Koekenbiersluis and under the Prins Hendrikkade, then pass the replica VOC ship before finishing at the Marineterrein.
• Short Swim and Junior Swim — 700 m. These swimmers start near the National Maritime Museum, or Scheepvaartmuseum, swim under the Kortjewandsbrug, turn near the VOC ship, and head to the Marineterrein finish.

Where to watch the Amsterdam City Swim for free

The route-side quays and bridges are the simple, no-ticket option. Pick one or two places rather than trying to follow the entire course on foot.

1. Keizersgracht near number 663

This is the most theatrical start: swimmers enter in waves, supporters gather on the bridges, and the energy is high from the first minute. It is also likely to be one of the busiest spots, so arrive early if you want a clear view.

2. The Magere Brug and the Amstel banks

The Classic Swim crosses the Amstel near the Magere Brug. The bridge gives you a recognisable Amsterdam backdrop; the banks give you a little more room to spread out. Expect crowds and do not stop in the cycling lane or block the bridge.

3. Nieuwe Herengracht and the Hortus stretch

This section is a calmer choice than the start. The wider quays around the Hortus area work better for families and for anyone who would rather watch the field pass than stand in the loudest crowd.

4. Prins Hendrikkade and the Oosterdok

This puts you close to the Scheepvaartmuseum, the VOC ship replica, and the final part of the route. It is a useful middle ground if you want to see swimmers without committing to the start or the finish.

5. The public side near the Marineterrein finish

The finish has the strongest event atmosphere, but access around the finish can be managed or restricted. Follow steward instructions, keep any reserved finish or patient areas clear, and do not assume that every part of the event site is open to passers-by.

As a rule, the further you move from the start, the easier it is to find a little breathing room.

Do you need a ticket?

There are two different things people mean by “watching the City Swim”:

1. Watching from the public route: route-side quays and bridges are the free option.
2. Entering the organised event grounds: the Amsterdam City Swim has an official visitor-ticket route for the event area. Check the official visitor-ticket page before you go, especially if you want food, music, ceremony access, or the full festival atmosphere.

The official event website is the final word on access, capacity, and any changes on the day.

Have a canal cruise booked?

Expect disruption on Sunday 6 September. Waternet says the swim route is closed to boat traffic while the event is running, including a closure of the Amstel as part of the safety operation.

Can you jump in too?

No. This is a registered fundraising event, not an open swim.

The important distinction is not only registration. The organiser and Waternet prepare and monitor the course for this specific event, while normal canal water is not official swimming water. Waternet advises visitors to use designated swimming locations and warns against swimming near boat traffic, sluices, pumping stations, or after heavy rain.

The City Swim was cancelled in 2018 after water-quality measurements found too much E. coli following heavy rain and sewer overflow, as NOS reported. That history is a useful reminder: clean-looking water is not the same as safe water.

A realistic spectator day

The early spectator

Have coffee in the Jordaan around 09:00, walk to the Keizersgracht start, and watch the first waves. If the quays are too busy, move towards the Amstel and stop near the Magere Brug. Continue east towards the Marineterrein later in the morning, then leave the event area for a museum or a long lunch.

The easy version

Skip the start. Walk towards the Oosterdok and the public side near the Marineterrein later in the morning, watch swimmers finish, and return through the Maritime Museum area. You see the heart of the event without spending the day pressed against a bridge rail.

The accidental tourist

You did not plan for a swim event. That is fine. Find a safe spot on a bridge or quay, cheer for a few minutes, and carry on with your Amsterdam day. The City Swim is a moving parade through several neighbourhoods; you do not need to collect every viewpoint.
